The Kuleshov Effect (Cutaways)

  Our first editing practice task was to look at how cutaways can change the context of a shot and construct different meanings and representations. In mine I cut away to a shot of some flowers. I did this to try and create the impression that they have made the person in question happy because they have seen them.

Continuity Editing

  C ontinuity editing  is the obvious change of something during an ongoing scene. It is essentially a magic trick, pacing and trajectory of the story. Trying to maintain the right and left relationship. This is to make it obvious where a person is looking, running or driving for example. If they are going somewhere (left to right) or coming back (right to left). Match on Action - Refers to film editing and video editing techniques where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action. Although the two shots may have been shot hours apart from each other, cutting on action gives the impression of continuous time when watching the edited film. It is a form of continuity editing.  180 Degree Rule -  A basic guideline that states that two characters in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationships to each other.
